Construction has begun on the ‘Korea Light Source (KLS)’ in Ochang, Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do, a facility spanning an area equivalent to 75 soccer fields and requiring an investment of 1.1643 trillion Korean won. This 4th-generation synchrotron accelerates electrons to near-light speeds, producing intense beams of light that act as a “giant microscope” to observe atomic arrangements and states of matter. While conventional microscopes can magnify small objects, synchrotrons—dubbed “dream microscopes”—can illuminate atoms and molecules with brightness and clarity millions of times greater. Basic science applications include developing smaller and faster chips, longer-lasting batteries, protein structure analysis for drug discovery, and identifying new materials.
