In Ochang, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, construction has recently begun on the “Korea Light Source(KLS),” on a site the size of 75 soccer fields, with a project cost of 1.1643 trillion won.
It is a fourth-generation synchrotron light accelerator, a “super-advanced microscope” that uses intense light created by accelerating electrons to speeds close to light to observe the atomic arrangement and state of matter. While ordinary microscopes can see small objects, synchrotron light sources, known as the microscopes of dreams, can see them millions of times brighter and clearer, down to the level of atoms or molecules.
